We are here to teach you the correct ways to grow roses in pots so that you get the bloom you desire.

Tips to Grow Roses In Pots

It’s easy:

The Pot Size

This is a no-brainer. Find a perfect-sized pot, with enough height and width for the roots to spread

Generally, a pot 15 inches deep and wide suffice. Make sure the bottom has drainage holes to avoid water logging and mud accumulation that may decay the plant roots.

The Best Soil for Container Roses

Well-draining, rich soil that has a balanced pH is considered ideal for container roses. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned gardener, add two-thirds potting mix to one-third compost. A cup of perlite can also be added, this will enhance drainage.

Choose the Right Variety

The right selection of rose plants, especially for those who like grow roses in pots. Select the types suitable for pots and the roots will fit within it. For instance,  ‘Miniature roses’, ‘Martha Gonzales” or ‘English roses’ varieties can be planted in pots. These are of small size and fit easily in the pot.

Planting Process

All kinds of soils work for roses, but loamy soil is considered the best. Add some organic matter and mix it many inches deep.

Now make a hole in the center.  Place the roots of the plant in the pot and make sure the roots are completely covered in soil. Then press the surrounding soil to establish the plant.

Irrigation and drainage

The rose plant should also be watered at regular intervals so that it does not go dry. However, do not allow the pot to accumulate too much water at any given time.

Generally, water roses two to three times a week but during the summer season, it may be necessary to increase this amount. There should be a drainage hole along the bottom part of the pot so that the root system does not drown in it.

Fertilizers and Nutrients

For those rose plants raised in pots you can water them with a balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10 rose fertilizer) once a month. Also the use of compost or organic fertilizer every 6 to 8 weeks is found to be effective as this supplies the needed nutrients to the plant.

Lighting and Space

Rose bushes need sunlight to grow. Locate the pot in an area where the plant can receive no less than 6 hours of direct sunlight every day. For instance, if you prefer the pot to be kept in the house, make sure that the plant gets enough daylight.

Pruning and Maintenance

Regular rose plant pruning should also be performed. Remove dead flowers and leaves so that the plant remains vigorous and the new shoots can develop properly. This activity facilitates the growth of the plant as well as the quality of the flowers.

Diseases and Pests

Observe rose plants so that they do not succumb to a variety of diseases as well as insects. Treatment can be applied if symptoms of pests and diseases are recognized early. Home remedies or organic pesticides that can kill infestations and erase diseases can be used.

Weather and Protection

Last but not least is the protection of thorny plants according to the weather conditions. When it is cold keep the rose plant pot somewhere where it is not extremely cold. In summer, make sure they receive some shade.
